OHPE Bulletin 273, Volume 2002, No. 273

This week we are pleased to present the second installment of Letters to the Editor with a short editorial by A. Simon Mielniczuk in which he introduces us to the Unclaimed Funds Database of the Bank of Canada.

We would also like to share some reader feedback letting us know about resources we have missed. Dianne Coppola, Project Consultant with Coppola & Associates, Inc. writes in response to last week's feature, "Building Support Networks for Isolated Seniors":

"Another innovative program that promotes the identification of seniors who may be isolated and at risk is the Niagara Gatekeepers Program ( program trains individuals, who, by virtue of their job or volunteer work, regularly come into contact with seniors (e.g. bank tellers, meter readers, oil delivery personnel, paramedics, firefighters, pastors and lay ministers, locksmiths, and pharmacists), to recognize signs that may indicate an individual could be at risk and to call a local community agency regarding their concerns. The agency ensures trained health/social service workers initiate contact with the individual to determine if additional home-based supports are needed. Services are only provided with the consent of the senior."

More information on the Program can be found on the website, by calling Niagara Region's Seniors Community Programs at 905-735-3339, or by e-mailing Dianne at

Dianne also forwarded a webpage that discusses health promotion for older adults at, which she learned of through the Click4HP listserv.

Ernie Ginsler, an organizational development and community planning consultant with Ginsler & Associates, Inc. also sent us a resource in response to OHPE #271.1 "Working in a Political Climate: Lessons from the Rave Issue". He provides a link to a Web-based toolbox on public policy and advocacy for Canadian non-profits that can be found at

For the next two weeks, the OHPE editorial team will be filling in for our vacationing editor. Noelle, we hope you have a wonderful holiday!

In other great news, the OHPE bulletin now has over 2300 subscribers! We are ever striving to ensure that each week's bulletin is full of pertinent announcements and, every two weeks, high-caliber, practical features and resources.
