Executive Director, Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare

The Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare in BC (OHSAH) was conceived in early 1998 in an Accord between management and union representatives. The Accord resulted in the creation of OHSAH, an agency with the goal of reducing workplace injuries and illness in healthcare workers and returning injured workers back to the job quickly and safely. The OHSAH is a unique Agency that employs a bipartite model of governance in which management and union representatives have an equal voice in directing the work of the Agency. This collaborative model of governance shapes the mandate of the organization and allows OHSAH to draw on expertise from academics, union representatives, and heath care executives in developing and introducing best practices in workplace safety. This collaboration also fosters internationally recognized evidence-based research in the areas of disability and disease prevention, occupational hygiene, ergonomics, occupational medicine, occupational psychology, education and training, and program evaluation.

Reporting directly to the OHSAH Board, the Executive Director will be responsible for leading the Agency’s day-to-day activities, with an overall focus on meeting its goals and the long-term sustainability of the organization. The successful incumbent will provide operational leadership to this non-profit provincial agency and work closely with the Board to develop strategic plans which will advance its vision, mission and objectives. Additionally, he/she will collaborate with provincial stakeholders including WorkSafeBC, university researchers and the Ministry of Health Services to position OHSAH as an organization that takes an innovative and evidence-based approach to improving workplace health through active research, intervention evaluation and the production and analysis of comparative data. The Executive Director will also continue to establish OHSAH as a significant voice for its stakeholders throughout British Columbia.

As the ideal candidate, you are an accomplished professional with exceptional leadership, problem-solving and interpersonal abilities. You have demonstrated your success in the health care industry in progressively senior leadership roles where you have been responsible for the development, implementation and achievement of operational goals. Sound judgment skills, an innovative nature and a proven ability to facilitate Board activities are some of your key attributes. Your direct experience in the area of Occupational Health and Safety and your first-hand experience and understanding of the governance model workings of a bipartite organization will carry you successfully into this role. A Masters Degree in an appropriate discipline will be an asset.
