Job Purpose

Coordinate the delivery of a quality volunteer program within The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre at the General Campus which will enhance quality of life for patients, families and caregivers dealing with cancer.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all aspects of the volunteer program with the hospital and ensure it meets the requirements of all stakeholders
  • Provide support as needed in all areas of the volunteer cycle (including recruitment, screening, orientation, placement, training, recognition and evaluation)
  • Act as an advocate and resource for volunteers by responding to issues, suggestions and concerns.  Advocate on behalf of volunteers to address issues related to accountability. Provide regular communication, feedback and appreciation to volunteers
  • Raise awareness about Society programs, services and messages within the hospital/lodge community
  • Represent the Canadian Cancer Society on various teams and committees at the host hospital ensuring Society policies, procedures, and processes are understood. Keep management and team members aware of Society initiatives, materials, and successes
  • Develop and promote new opportunities within the integrated cancer program model.  Identify and access patient needs in conjunction with host hospital staff. Build partnerships to share development and delivery of programs and services
  • Act as liaison between the Society and hospital volunteers
  • Ensure office administration functions and budgeting of the program are completed
  • Other duties as required


  • Related post secondary education, preferably in social sciences or volunteer engagement; or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3 years related experience in a health care environment, multi-level non-profit or community health organization
  • General understanding of cancer treatments and their effects, cancer and diagnostic testing, inpatient and outpatient care
  • Familiarity with legislation affecting program delivery, e.g. Occupational Health & Safety
  • Organizational and time management skills to plan, prioritize, and meet ongoing service delivery demands in an offsite environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to build effective working relationships and collaborate with volunteers and hospital staff; and a demonstrated ability to build teams, motivate and support others, and to act in a leadership capacity
  • Effective communication skills to interact with diverse groups of volunteers, staff, hospital and community partners
  • Ability to analyze issues, identify opportunities to integrate services, anticipate potential problems, demonstrates flexibility and solution-oriented thinking
  • Fluency in oral French is preferred  
  • Proficient in MSOffice (Word/Excel)
  • A Criminal Records Check is required
  • Non-smoker

Working Conditions

  • Works independently with accountability to multiple partners (manager located off-site)
  • May be exposed to a broad range of emotions from clients, volunteers and caregivers who are engaged at various stages of their cancer journey
  • Inter-organizational interaction and cooperation required, as is a need to influence others without direct authority
