Salary: $100 per hour one day per week in each location

Position Summary:

This practice will focus on (but is not limited to) providing basic dentistry to children and youth who are eligible for Healthy Smiles Ontario program (i.e., are in financial need), with the goal of building a foundation for children and youth to lead healthier, more productive lives as they enter into adulthood.

The practice will build upon current dental screening and preventive services provided by WECHU as mandated under the Ontario Public Health Standards (2008).

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Performs basic clinical dentistry by providing dental diagnostics and treatment plan (medical history, examination, radiographs), and preventive and clinical care to standards currently accepted by the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario
  • Reviews client’s general medical history at initial examination and updates at each appointment
  • Prescribes radiographs as component of diagnostic process
  • Maintains client/patients records as per the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario record keeping guidelines
  • Ensures the confidentiality of client health information
  • Ensures that the necessary infection control measures and procedures are followed in the clinic
  • Maintains current knowledge of the various financial assistance programs, such as Children In Need of Treatment (CINOT), Ontario Works basic, emergency, discretionary services; and Public Health Dental Clinic eligibility requirements
  • Counsels clients, families, or caregivers regarding client’s dental diagnosis, necessary treatment and daily oral hygiene care, nutrition, and/or tobacco use
  • Obtains necessary informed consent from client or caregivers before proceeding with treatment
  • Refers clients to other community dental health professionals, as necessary, following established protocols
  • Links with the CINOT program for urgent oral health services to facilitate continuity of care
  • Ensures dental standards and procedures are current, departmentally consistent, efficient, and effective
  • Assumes delegated responsibility for the daily operation of the assigned clinic by providing professional direction to staff, directing patient flow, and maintaining records
  • Consults with client’s physician regarding existing serious medical conditions

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Incorporates and strengthens collaborative and interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Respects and values the diversity of communities and individuals
  • Supports the WECHU’s  student placement programs
  • Contributes to the WECHU’s practices of hiring, orientating, and training of staff


  • Current member of good standing with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario
  • Minimum one year clinical practical experience
  • Current CPR Certification, Health Care Provider (HCP) level
  • Knowledge of current clinical techniques and procedures, including diagnosis through visual examination,  interpretation of radiographs and preventative services
  • Must possess the following traits/skills:  patience, empathy, and observation skills in order to work with children, and youth be sensitive to the needs of the designated target population and the care they require
  • Knowledge of the strengths and challenges of the priority population being served
  • Awareness of, and ability to support, provincial and federal privacy regulations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
  • Excellent organizational skills and efficiency in practice
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and a commitment to being a “team player”
  • Valid drivers license, insurance coverage, access to vehicle
