Community Support Workers, Jean Tweed Centre

JEAN TWEED CENTRE, a community based centre for women with substance use and gambling problems, invites applicants for the following position:


As a Community Support Worker you will be part of a team that coordinates a support network and linkages for women living in supportive housing.  Women living in this housing will have complex addiction issues as well as a range of related challenges.  This project is part of a larger initiative to increase the health and social outcomes to people with problematic substance use by providing stable housing and appropriate services.  This is a full-time, permanent position.

Note: Staff will be required to visit resident’s apartment units and may therefore be exposed to second hand smoke.  There may be occasional evening and weekend hours. 

The individual hired for this position will:
* Participate in the referral and intake process for the supportive housing units
* Establish a comprehensive assessment and a service plan with tenants including referrals, as appropriate
* Support activities geared toward establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles with a particular emphasis on, relapse prevention, community engagement, and life skills
* Support the tenant in navigating the social services and health care system
* Mediate conflict, including crisis prevention and intervention
* Provide case management and individual/group counseling
* Participate in existing community and service networks
* Complete reporting and evaluation requirements
* Work primarily from the local housing office at the housing site
* Attend regular meetings at the Jean Tweed office in Etobicoke

* A combination of three years experience in the fields of addiction and housing
* A degree in social work or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience
* Expertise providing counseling and case management to individuals who are experiencing or have experienced a complex history of substance use
* A working knowledge of best practices with regard to substance use and women, harm reduction, trauma, and the therapeutic relationship
* A working knowledge of women-centered services and trauma-informed responses
* Crisis intervention skills, with well developed problem solving abilities and interpersonal skills
* Group counseling related to complex addictions and other related issues
* Good oral and written communication
* Creativity and flexibility to approaches
* Knowledge of community resources and supports
* Ability to work effectively as part of a team and interact with workers from a variety of agencies
* Strong assessment skills
* Understanding of cultural competency
* Ability to work independently with minimum day to day supervision
