Registered Dietician, South Asian Diabetes Prevention Program, Flemington Health Centre

We are seeking a candidate for the position of Registered Dietician to work collaboratively within a team environment composed of a community health nurse, three outreach workers and a program coordinator on the South Asian Diabetes prevention  program targeting the South Asian community.  
Employment terms: Part time (21hours/week, with the expectation of working some evenings and weekends)
Expected Start date: April, 2011
Skills and Qualifications:

  • Registration with the College of Dieticians of Ontario
  • Experience in diabetes education in a community setting is a significant asset
  • A Certified Diabetes Educator (or working towards completing the designation) is preferred
  • Sensitivity and knowledge of the needs of multi-ethnic community
  • Ability to speak a second language (South Asian) is required
  • Experience in group facilitation
  • Well organized, ability to work well independently and as a team member
  • Familiarity with computer technology is needed
  • Ability to speak one or more of the South Asian languages is required
  • Experience working with a multidisciplinary team
  • Willingness to work in non-clinical settings and ability to travel offsite are requirements of the position
  • Must be skilled in disease prevention with good understanding of the role of health promotion
  • Contribution to identifying and meeting the main health needs of the community
  • Promoting health through working in collaboration with other sectors in order to address the social and environmental factors that inhibit health and well-being pertaining to Diabetes


  • Plan, deliver, and evaluate diabetes education programs and community initiatives for the South Asian community in collaboration with the project team members. Programs may include: group teaching, support groups, community kitchens, and other initiatives to support people with diabetes or prediabetes 
  • Develop, organize and facilitate community kitchen sessions to promote healthy eating
  • Participate in conducting mass screening for pre diabetes
  • Refer clients to other services for further care
  • Meet monthly performance targets of the project
  • Explore and seek collaborative opportunities with relevant organizations
  • Develop and evaluate educational resources
  • Participate in team meetings and centre-wide initiatives
  • Perform administrative tasks, mmaintain accurate records and write monthly reports
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of the project
