The Ontario Lung Association’s Youth Advocacy Training Institute (YATI) supports positive youth development and provides training to equip youth and adults working with youth with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote health and advocate for change in their communities.
Reporting to the YATI Program Manager and working with another Community Education Specialist and other members of the YATI team, the Community Education Specialist researches and develops curricula or other education programming as assigned, and participates in the planning, delivery and evaluation of YATI programming and training sessions held throughout Ontario. Some weekend work may be involved.
Initially, this is a contract position from September 15, 2011 to March 31, 2012. Extension for a full year is a possibility.
- With support from the Program Manager, participate in the development and review of training curricula in areas of health promotion, chronic diseases and advocacy. This includes researching in applicable areas and conducting needs assessments, and where applicable, adapting current curricula to specific audiences.
- Implement YATI programming in all areas including health promotion, chronic disease and advocacy, and participate in the pilot-testing of new curricula where appropriate.
- Support youth serving agencies in the development of training, health promotion campaigns, youth engagement and program development.
- Contribute to the planning and delivery of YATI's educational or other program development and health promotion programs and participate in YATI program activities such as training events and conference implementation among others.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of program evaluation tools.
- Participate in strategic planning processes regarding YATI program development and implementation.
- Enter monthly data into the Performance Indicators Management Systems.
- Other tasks as assigned by the YATI Program Manager and/or the Provincial Manager, Health Promotion.
- University degree in education, health promotion or health sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required; related post graduate experience would be an asset
- knowledge of health promotion and youth development theory and practices an asset
- minimum of 3-5 years experience working with youth in a variety of settings
- training, knowledge and experience in youth development or youth engagement with a minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience in training, education and curriculum development; OR
- training, knowledge and experience in health promotion and/or health advocacy with a minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience in training, education and curriculum development
- experience in communications and special event planning an asset
- experience in coalition building and/or working with coalitions or networks an asset
- Relevant Skills and Abilities:
- strong written and spoken communication and presentation skills; bilingualism would be preferable
- advanced skills in youth or adult program and curriculum development
- effective educational/training and facilitation skills in terms of workshops, seminars, etc.
- understanding of youth-related issues, volunteer service and alternative education
- capacity to implement non-formal educational programming
- advanced facilitation and relationship building skills with the demonstrated ability to coordinate activities via networks, coalitions or between client groups
- commitment to social change, youth issues and cultural competence
- demonstrated program planning, research and evaluation skills
- excellent administrative and computer skills with accuracy and attention to detail
- critical thinking, analysis and problem solving
- diplomacy and political astuteness
- ability to respond to diverse audience needs and settings adapt accordingly
- organization and time management skills with the ability to multi-task, strategically prioritize and meet deadlines
- ability to work as a member of a team as well as function independently
- means of transportation and willingness to travel
