Planned Parenthood Toronto is a community-based, pro-choice agency committed to the principles of equity and to providing accessible and inclusive services which promote healthy sexuality and informed decision making to the people of the City of Toronto.  We are currently seeking a Community Health Promoter to work 28 hours per week for a 20 weeks (November 21, 2011 – March 31, 2012), with diverse women’s communities, specifically with women accessing the shelter system, to assess their sexual health needs and to develop, implement and evaluate health promotion programming that address those needs. This position is a member of PPT’s Mobile Health Unit team.

Responsibilities include:

  • Through community consultations and needs assessments, identify emerging needs and trends with respect to women’s sexual health
  • Work with community members and agencies to develop strategies that address women’s sexual health issues
  • Work in collaboration with community agencies to develop a range of health promotion activities including sexual health workshops, groups and projects
  • Develop and conduct program evaluation
  • Coordinate all components of women’s sexual and reproductive health workshop initiative including: promotion and outreach; intake and booking; preparation and facilitation; module development; evaluation
  • Develop and coordinate sexual health programming for women accessing the shelter system, in particular newcomer women
  • Liaise with community partners to build and maintain positive community relationships
  • Act as a resource on sexual health issues for staff and externally with agencies
  • Support advocacy related to community health needs, including participating in community forums and networks
  • Support the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion resources
  • Participate in the implementation of PPT’s volunteer peer-to-peer training
  • Assist in the development of funding proposals
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new staff
  • Participate in agency’s committee, team and program meetings, as requested and including the Annual General Meeting
  • Perform other duties from time to time as related to the job and based on agency needs

Qualifications include:    

  • University or college degree in social services, health or education or 5 years equivalent experience
  • Three to five years health promotion experience in a community setting
  • Experience working from a community development perspective
  • Experience and commitment to working with women from diverse communities from an anti-discrimination/anti-oppression perspective
  • Experience in workshop and/or group facilitation
  • Experience with networking and working collaboratively with local agencies and community groups
  • Commitment to pro-choice philosophy
  • Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation
  • Knowledge of sexual health issues for women
  • Experience working in the shelter system, issues on violence against women and diverse women’s communities an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to: equity goals and principles; youth positive, LGBTQ positive, and sex positive advocacy; and, sexual and reproductive rights
  • A solid understanding of the social determinants of health
  • Available to work evenings as required
  • Commitment to working cooperatively in a community-based setting as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency and experience working in a computerized environment

This is a 20 week contract position scheduled to work 28 hours per week. Contract start date: Monday November 21, 2011.
