Community Services Coordinator, Canadian Cancer Society

Job Purpose

Under the direction of the Manager, the Community Services Coordinator is responsible for the planning and implementation of community services at the local level. The Community Services Coordinator contributes to enhancing the quality and profile of the Society’s community services in the community.

Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Functional Duties

  • Works with unit volunteers and the Manager to identify community program services delivery needs within the unit, through feedback from the community during daily service delivery of Canadian Cancer Society programs.
  • Assists in the enhancement of the unit’s profile in the community through linking with others in the cancer care continuum.
  • Works with community service leadership volunteers to ensure effective recruitment, placement, orientation and development of volunteers in accordance with established goals and objectives.
  • Supports unit community services volunteers in the delivery of programs.
  • Acts as a program resource by providing information about Canadian Cancer Society programs to volunteers and the public.
  • Acts as back up for the transportation coordinator i.e. intake function for transportation requirements and planning daily schedules of volunteer drivers.
  • Maintains an ongoing report of transportation services provided each month.
  • Maximizes use of existing tools/resources and identifies opportunities for development.
  • Provides administrative support for community services programs.
  • Liaises with regional staff as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations (Use or wear any protective equipment or devices required, report any incidents and unsafe conditions to your manager, and do not use equipment or work in any way that may endanger any worker or volunteer).
  • Review and comply with the Canadian Cancer Society’s health & safety policy.


  • Some post-secondary education in a related field, or equivalent combined education and direct experience.
  • Volunteer Management experience required and must enjoy working with volunteers.
  • Community development interest/experience is required.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills to liaise with patients, volunteers, staff and the healthcare community in a professional, tactful manner.
  • Administrative skills to coordinate community programs and organizational skills to prioritize own work and that of volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability in problem solving and good judgement.
  • Demonstrated time-management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and on various tasks simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of community resources available to cancer patients and their families.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook/Word/Excel) and use of databases.
  • Availability to work some evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to lift/move, unpack and stock materials as necessary.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Cancer Society policies, procedures and programs.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle is an asset.
  • A criminal record check is required.
  • Non-smoker.
