Oakville, Ontario and Richmond Hill, Ontario
November 28, 2011 and November 29, 2011
Parks and Recreation Ontario, in partnership with local hosts is pleased to present the "Community Engagement in Creating Better Built Environments" workshops with Jim Diers and John Barker. This workshop will focus on the community's role in shaping their towns and neighbourhoods, using the powerful asset based community development approach.
Jim and John will share lessons from their more than 65 years of experience in engaging communities in planning for their neighbourhoods and in designing and building new parks, playgrounds, ball fields, community gardens and other amenities.
Workshop participants will learn how to use community engagement tools such as visioning, bottom-up planning, open space technology, matching grants and asset-based community development. Through a series of hands-on exercises and group discussions, John and Jim will demonstrate how design games, mapping and other brainstorming activities can activate the public design process, and provide valuable feedback to design and planning professionals.
