School Travel Planning: Stepping It Up! Tools of Change

Online
May 1, 2013

This award-winning program demonstrates an integrated approach to school travel planning at 30 elementary schools to support the use of active and sustainable transportation modes. Learn about the partnerships, policies and other tools and approaches that led to the success and sustainability of the program roll-out in Peel and Hamilton, Ontario. The information will be of interest to a broad range of practitioners including planners, public health staff, school administrators and educators, engineers and policy makers.

The project was made possible through funding from Transport Canada and a partnership with the University of Toronto, Green Communities Canada, Region of Peel and City of Hamilton, the local school boards, and numerous community supporters. Stepping It Up measured an overall average decrease in school car trips of 7% in the morning period and 3% in the afternoon period, with an equivalent increase in pedestrian trips. Landmark panelists were impressed by the program’s coordinated, highly replicable, and institutionalized approach to school travel planning, which refined and advanced existing tools and methods from the Canadian School Travel Planning toolkit and the Smart Commute program.

Registration is $50; free for the first 25 connecting locations that tell the registrar how they have used information from past Tools of Change webinars or from the Tools of Change website.
