We are the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, an accredited health unit providing public health services to approximately 500,000 residents in the County of Simcoe and the District of Muskoka through our 9 offices. With a staff of over 400, our head office is located in Barrie, approximately one hour north of Toronto, in Central Ontario. The Health Promotion Specialist provides expertise, direction, and leadership in health promotion theory and health promotion strategies and their application to program planning, implementation and evaluation; acts as a coordinator, consultant and a resource to staff and managers in health promotion theories and strategies. The position researches and interprets information, evaluates strategies, programs, supports, resources, and policies and provides recommendations using current literature and research incorporating epidemiological and health status information; works to ensure effective public health practice through consultation on health promotion research and best practices to enable staff, other agencies, professionals and sectors to promote and improve health, foster healthy growth and development, reduce the risk of disease and injury; serves as an advocate for healthy public policy and system level change to promote health and establish an environment that supports health.  This position represents the service area/agency at the local, regional, provincial and federal level.
