Temporary, up to One Year (CUPE 543.3)(Band 9)

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Chronic Disease Prevention and Workplace Wellness, the Public Health Dietitian (PHD) will be involved in the planning, implementation and monitoring of relevant sections of the Chronic Disease Prevention and Family Health Program Standards of the Ontario Public Health Standards (2008) as outlined in the organizational Healthy Eating Program Plan. The PHD will work with other nutrition staff as well as with interdisciplinary teams from within, as well as external to, the Health Unit. The key core competencies required for this position include: communication; leadership; ethics and professionalism; public health sciences; assessment and analysis; policy and program planning; implementation and evaluation.

Position Responsibilities

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Organize/assist in the development of community-based health promotion
  • Provide support to community-based coalitions as appropriate
  • Identify, review, revise and/or develop resources
  • Collect and record statistical data
  • Provide consultation and in-service to Health Unit staff
  • Participate on and provide support to various Health Unit workgroups and committees
  • Provide consultation to service providers, workplace personnel, health professionals, and other relevant community partners
  • Work interactively with local media
  • Write articles and columns for newspaper, newsletters and other relevant publications
  • Provide telephone or drop-in consultation to members of the public
  • Provide presentations to service providers, multiplier groups, and other groups
  • Evening and weekend work may be required
  • Responsibilities require work throughout Windsor and Essex County
  • Must work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all policies and procedures of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit

Qualifications

  • A current Certificate of Registration from the College of Dietitians is required
  • Bachelor Degree in foods and nutrition (or equivalent) from a recognized university and completion of a Dietetic Internship
  • A minimum of 1 year experience working in a health promotion or community health field
  • A working knowledge of behaviour change theory, health promotion strategies and population health
  • Superior communication (written and oral), problem solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Professional computer software applications
  • A valid Ontario Driver's Licence and access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours is required
  • A criminal clearance certificate must be provided at the applicant’s cost

Assets Include:

  • Competence in both official languages would be considered an asset
