Position Title: Registered Practical Nurse: Foot Care
Accountability: Manager, Primary Health Care


The RPN, Foot Care will deliver basic, advanced and diabetic professional foot care services. The RPN will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to support overall health and wellness of clients. This is a half-time, permanent position.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide basic, advanced and diabetic foot care to clients on an ongoing basis. (Note – as of July 2013, this is a caseload of about 125.)
  • Work with the client to establish a plan of care. Provide education and health promotion to clients regarding foot care, footwear and general health maintenance of feet. Receive referrals from staff and from self-referrals for foot care.
  • Maintain schedule and wait list by incorporating staff and self-referrals as appropriate. Ensure follow-up of treatment every 5-8 weeks to be determined by the needs of the individual client in accordance with best practices and infection control policies.
  • Coordinate and provide referrals for foot wear/insole needs with a pedorthist as required.
  • Responsible for knowledge of proper handling, cleaning and preparation of foot care instruments in decontamination room that are to be sent out for sterilization weekly, in accordance with infection control practices.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records by documenting symptoms and conditions, nursing interventions and recommendation for ongoing treatment in the client’s progress notes of the electronic chart. Reports any concerns to their physician, NP or other provider and/or follow-up.
  • Maintain a foot care supplier’s database. Responsible for the supply and maintenance of foot care room, tools and equipment as well as the ordering of supplies and equipment unique to foot care.
  • Plan and provide health teaching to residents and their families as required.
  • Work closely with other providers and provide input and recommendations in client care conferences.
  • Co-facilitate, with the Diabetic Educator, the foot care module of the Diabetic Living Well program.
  • Participate in organizational committees as time and interest permit, especially those involving areas of expertise.

  • Works during both regular and extended hours of operation in locations identified by the Centre.
  • On occasion, other temporary duties may be required.


  • Valid registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).
  • Two years clinical foot care practice.
  • Certification from an Advanced Foot Care Course including the following: cutting and packing involuted nails; debridement of onychomycotic nails; reduction of vascular callus or corns; reduction of callus with fissures; diabetic foot care assessment; and the development of plan of care, referrals and treatment(s).
  • Current certificate in CPR.
  • Knowledge and skills for proper storage methods of autoclaved packaged tools in decontamination room and safe transfer and storage of said tools for use in foot care clinic on any working clinic day.
  • Awareness of, and ability to support, provincial and federal privacy regulations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a commitment to be a “Team Player”.
  • Ability to work independently and organize own schedule with appropriate attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including an electronic medical record and electronic scheduling system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis and ability to meet the physical demands of the position.
  • A current and satisfactory Criminal and Vulnerable Persons Check is required after offer, but before starting work.
