The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPR DHU) has an opening for a temporary full-time CDC Nurse (July 1-December 31, 2014, with the possibility of extension) in its Communicable Disease Control Department in the Port Hope office.

Position Summary:
As a member of the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) Department the CDC Nurse is accountable to CDC Management for the implementation of the assigned Requirements of the Infectious Diseases Program Standards of the Ontario Public Health Standards (OPHS) (www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/publichealth/oph_standards/docs/oph...) and related protocols and guidelines including but not limited to the:

  • Exposure of Emergency Services Workers to Infectious Diseases Protocol
  • Immunization Management Protocol
  • Infection Prevention and Control in Licensed Day Nurseries Protocol
  • Infection Prevention and Control Practices Complaint Protocol
  • Infectious Diseases Protocol
  • Institutional/Facility Outbreak Prevention and Control Protocol
  • Sexual Health and Sexually Transmitted Infections Prevention and Control Protocol
  • Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Protocol
  • Vaccine Storage and Handling Protocol (www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/publichealth/oph_standards/ophsprot...)
  • and other duties as assigned by CDC Management.

Areas of emphasis may include Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control; Sexual Health, Sexually Transmitted Infections and Blood-borne infections (including HIV); Tuberculosis Prevention and Control; and/or Vaccine Preventable Diseases.

All Registered Nurses employed by HKPR DHU are required to maintain competency in immunization and participate in clinics as required.

The CDC Nurse is expected to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team to apply, adapt, choose and/or recommend changes to established methods, procedures or policies and/or to develop new procedures for approval to complete assigned work. The CDC Nurse will seek direction when solutions to problems are not apparent and/or are not within the intent of established practices including scope of practice.

The position involves travel and variations of the working day.

The successful candidate will have:

1. Education

  • Requirements for employment as a Public Health Nurse as per Regulation 566 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act
  • University degree in Nursing

2. Experience

CDC nurses in the following assignments: Communicable Disease Control, Sexual Health Services, Vaccine Preventable Diseases

  • Community/public health and/or health promotion experience is an asset

CDC Nurse in the following position: Infection Prevention and Control

  • Two years that includes Infection Control and/or Public Health experience
  • Infectious Disease experience is an asset

3. Other

  • Proof of current registration with College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Proficiency in the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for the role of Public Health,
  • Front Line Provider as defined by the Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada (http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/php-psp/ccph-cesp/stmts-enon-eng.php)
  • Working knowledge of the OPHS
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a vehicle
  • Current and satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Proof of immunizations required by HKPRDHU
  • Satisfactory completion of probationary period (3 months ONA)
  • Current CPR and First Aid (HCP level) or willingness to be certified at this level within 2 months of hire

CDC Nurses in the following assignments: Communicable Disease Control, Vaccine Preventable Nurse

  • Successful completion of Infection Control Certification is an asset

CDC Nurse in the following position: Infection Prevention and Control

  • Successful completion of Infection Control Certification within two years of hire is required

Location: Port Hope
Salary Range: $70,762-$77,696 (ONA 2014)
