Overall Job Responsibility:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Public Health Nutritionist works as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a population health promotion framework. The Nutritionist is accountable for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating nutrition programs and services and policy as described in relevant sections of the Chronic Disease and Injuries and Family Health Program Standards (2008). The Nutritionist works with and provides consultation to other staff within the health unit, external groups and committees as well as individuals.  The Nutritionist has a lead role in the research and development of food and nutrition related programs, services and policies.

The position supports the on-going operations of the Windsor-Essex County Health unit.

The successful candidate must work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all policies and procedures of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.

Key areas of Responsibility:

All competencies apply to the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of specific community-based public health nutrition resources, programs and services supporting the requirements of the Ontario Public Health Standards and our community.  Competencies are taken from the integrated competencies for Dietetic Education and Practice (ICDEP) (2013) and Core Competencies for Public Health in Canada (PHAC,2008).

This list of duties is not all-inclusive and may be modified as public health programs change and as health unit need requires.

Position Qualifications:

Education, training, & experience

  • A minimum of a Masters Degree in Nutrition or related area from an accredited university
  • Current registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario
  • Bachelor degree in foods and nutrition (or equivalent) from an accredited university
  • Completed Dietitians of Canada approved Dietetic Internship or integrated undergraduate program in Nutrition
  • At least one year’s experience working in the area of community health nutrition
  • A strong background in writing, resource development, education, behaviour change interventions and media relations.
  • Advanced communication, problem solving, analytical, time management and interpersonal skills, and conducting research
  • Proficiency with current computer applications ( Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Internet, Outlook)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workloads
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, access to a reliable vehicle during working hours, as well as 1 million dollars in liability insurance.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language would be an asset
  • Satisfactory vulnerable sector police information search
  • Immunizations and TB screening as per WECHU policies
