Public Health Inspector Student Practicum, Middlesex-London Health Unit

The Middlesex-London Health Unit is seeking motivated, self-directed students for field training in Public Health Inspection within the Environmental Health & Infectious Diseases Division.  

Student Public Health Inspectors will be mentored and trained by experienced Public Health Inspectors in all aspects of the Ontario Public Health Standards. Mock Oral Board exams will also be provided to assist students in preparation for the Certification examinations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting compliance inspections
  • Investigating complaints and animal bite incidents
  • Working on special projects
  • Providing written reports to satisfy program needs and the requirements of the Board of Certification

Practicum positions are available for a 16 week employment period, from May 9, 2016 until August 26, 2016. Preference will be given to candidates enrolled in or who have graduated from the 4th year of studies in the Environmental Health Program, or the 2nd year of the fast-track program in Environmental Health, and have no previous practicum experience.

The hourly rate of pay is $19.67 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay, for a 35-hour workweek.  


  • Proficient in written and oral communication skills
  • Capable of working independently
  • Proficiency in the areas of documentation, Microsoft Office, and database software
  • Possess a current and valid Police Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Possess a valid Class “G” driver’s licence and have regular access to a vehicle for work-related purposes

London is the geographic centre of Southwestern Ontario, strategically located at the junction of Highways 401 and 402, less than a two-hour drive from Windsor, Detroit, Toronto and Buffalo, and less than an hour from the Grand Bend resort area on the shores of Lake Huron. The City of London, also known as the Forest City, is the home of Western University and Fanshawe College.
