Exciting Public Health Leadership Opportunity!

The Ontario Public Health Association (OPHA) Reproductive Health Workgroup (RHWG) is looking for a new Vice-Chair. The RHWG is a dynamic group of over 40 public health and other professionals who are interested in promoting and advocating for reproductive health within Ontario. The workgroup focuses on a broad range of reproductive health issues and advocates for accessible and equitable services and supports. This exciting leadership opportunity will allow you to connect with public and community health professionals from across the province and help promote reproductive health issues.

Background on OPHA RHWG

The OPHA has established a strong record of success as the voice of public health in Ontario. As a member-based, not-for-profit association, OPHA has been advancing the public health agenda since 1949. OPHA provides leadership on issues affecting the public’s health and strengthens the impact of those who are active in public and community health throughout Ontario. OPHA is unique in that our membership represents many disciplines from across multiple sectors. As such OPHA has a number of volunteer subject matter expert workgroups that help drive issues for OPHA, including an active Reproductive Health Workgroup (RHWG).

RHWG members represent a wide variety of disciplines and organizations, with many from Public Health Units across the province. Some examples of recent RHWG activities and achievements include:

  • Submitted letter of support for Ontario’s new legislation on pregnancy and infant loss (Bill 141)
  • Release of a position paper on preconception health in Ontario - SHIFT –   Enhancing the Health of Ontarians: A Call to Action for Preconception Health  Promotion and Care.
  • Provided consultations and presentations to Provincial Council for Maternal and Child Health on new low-risk birth strategy and Public Health Ontario’s Healthy Human Development table on perinatal mental health
  • Participated as expert advisors on various provincial initiatives, such as the Health Quality Ontario report on Caesarean Sections in Ontario; Best Start Resource Centre Youth and Adult Reproductive Life Plan, Prenatal Key Messages resource, and Obesity in Prenatal and Preconception periods
  • Participated as expert reviewers for the Centre of Effective Practice's Preconception Health Assessment Tool
  • Provided feedback on numerous provincial and national reproductive health resources, such as BORN's OMama app and SOGC website
  • Review of web-based decision-aids on labour and birth

Activities and time commitment

The Vice-Chair role is a two-year term. The first year aims to expose the Vice-Chair to activities of the OPHA RHWG and to learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Chair. In the second-year, the Vice-Chair would assume the Chair role for the RHWG. Some examples of Vice-Chair/Chair responsibilities and activities include:

  • Coordinating/chairing 4 teleconference meetings (including preparing and distributing agenda and minutes) and a face to face meeting per year with the RHWG
  • Coordinating advocacy initiatives
  • Providing support to current RHWG activities as needed
  • Supporting distribution of relevant communication to RHWG
  • Participating in other OPHA meetings (by teleconference) including attending AGM in Toronto (if possible)
  • Representing RHWG on external advocacy opportunities and meetings as needed.

Interested candidates should be willing to commit to the two-year term and be able to dedicate approximately 4 hours per week to support the RHWG. Both the Vice-Chair and Chair role are volunteer positions and require OPHA membership in good standing.


Interested candidates should have:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working on reproductive health issues within a community or public health context in Ontario
  • Previous experience chairing committees or working groups
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience with advocacy initiatives would be an asset
