Health Promotion Ontario (public health) Spring Conference

HPO (ph) is holding their 7th annual Spring Conference at Kempenfelt Conference Centre in Barrie. Join us May 3 and 4, 2001, for two days of information exchange, resource sharing and a chance to network with other health promotion professionals from all over Ontario. The conference theme is risk communication. Speakers from diverse backgrounds will discuss the art and science of risk communication from their unique perspectives.

Conference presenters include:

* Mariella Vigneaux, Public Information Coordinator from Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Health Unit will present "Walkerton. Managing a Large Outbreak: A Communications Perspective"

* Nancy Dubois, Consultant, Health Communication Unit will moderate a panel on risk communication. She will also be facilitating sessions on the elements of a risk communication plan including practical tips and strategies associated with working with the media.

* Wendy Cukier, Professor at Ryerson will present information surrounding her work as president for the Coalition for Gun Control.

* Katija A. Blaine, University of Guelph is discussing risk communication strategies related to food safety including communication with consumers about genetically engineered food and crops.

* Lori Chow, Director of Population Health Resource and Communications and Bruce Nugent, Communications Coordinator, Thunder Bay & District Health Unit, will discuss their communication strategy with their boil water advisory last year.

* Monique Stewart, Dr. Geoff Dunkley and Linda Michelin from Ottawa will describe the concept of benchmarking in public health, its relevance to program planning and evaluation and benefits. They will also introduce the web-based benchmarking program being developed.

* Also, back by popular demand! A resource sharing session which highlights the great work happening in public health.
