Rural Youth Migration Between 1971 and 1996. (2001)

An analysis of rural youth migration in Canada over a twenty-five year period, this paper traces losses of youth from rural areas. All provinces have experienced reductions in rural youth populations with Saskatchewan and the Maritimes having the highest losses and Alberta and British Columbia the lowest. With the exception of the Atlantic Provinces, urban areas gained, with Alberta experiencing the highest increases. Leaders of provincial in-migration for youth were Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia.
