Health, Work and Wellness Institute

A new national organization - the non-profit Health, Work and Wellness Institute will encourage companies to focus on all the factors - social and physical, that affect employee health.

According to board member, Martin Shain, director of the U of T's Centre for Health Promotion Workplace Program - companies too often think they are achieving workplace health with personal programs such as stop-smoking or stress management. However, he continued, conditions of high demand and low control or lots of effort for little reward can lead to higher rates of cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, depression and drug or alcohol abuse.

The membership-based Institute will offer a resource centre, speakers' bureau, newsletters, networking opportunities and an annual Health, Work and Wellness Conference. (416) 920-9000 x288 (from Community Action newspaper November 8, 1999)
