Hospital For Sick Children - Research Assistant



A research assistant is currently being sought for a challenging and interesting 3-4 year project presently underway in the Division of Adolescent Medicine. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an HIV risk reduction educational program for incarcerated youth. This is a multi-site study involving travel within Ontario.


- co-facilitate educational sessions on HIV/AIDS delivered to incarcerated adolescents

- co-facilitate meetings / information sessions for staff in young offender institutions

- co-ordinate scheduling at sites for recruitment and intake of participants

- schedule part-time interviewer staff members for recruitment visits

- work in partnership with interviewer staff (tracking participants, reviewing procedures, contacting probation officers on their behalf, providing support, etc.)

- liaise with teachers, institutional staff, probation officers and other professionals

- liaise with community agencies

- administrative tasks including: report writing, financial record keeping, processing cheque requisitions, preparing correspondence as needed with funding agency, correctional institutions and other agencies, managing and organizing large quantities of questionnaires and information, maintaining program resources, etc.

- data management, scoring questionnaires and data entry

- adherence to strict time-lines of research protocol

- attendance at planning meetings and regular appointments with Primary Investigator and other members of the research team

- work collaboratively with co-facilitator, research team members, and staff at young offender facilities

- public relations functions as they arise

- some travel involved (ie. Uxbridge, Ajax, Oakville, Coburg, Brampton, Goderich)

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS: knowledge of HIV/AIDS; experience working with adolescents (preferably incarcerated youth); familiarity with research methodology and prior experience working on a large, multi-year project desirable; knowledge of learning disabilities and adaptive teaching strategies an asset; well-developed interpersonal skills and experience with public speaking or teaching; excellent organizational capabilities, proven time management skills, demonstrated thoroughness and attention to detail; effective problem solving and leadership skills; flexibility and capability of working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team; computer experience: working knowledge of Microsoft Word, familiarity with e-mail and Internet, willingness to learn SYS-DAT; driver's license and vehicle required; ability to make a commitment for 1 - 1
