RFP: Qualitative Researcher, Ontario Child Nutrition Program Evaluation Project


The Ontario Child Nutrition Program Evaluation Project "(OCNPEP) is a three year initiative examining the extent to which child nutrition programs (CNPs) meet best practices. During phase two, a qualitative researcher will be hired to conduct focus groups and individual interviews with children, parents, volunteers, educators and program coordinators regarding their perceptions of CNPs.



Key Deliverables

The qualitative researcher will work with the OCNPEP Steering Committee (including Regional Working Groups and the Qualitative Research Task Group) and project coordinator to implement the qualitative study work plan with the following key deliverables:

1. Review and fine tune focus group and individual interview guides by December 31, 2003

2. Recruit focus groups and individual interview participants

3. Arrange attendance at the focus groups and individual interviews

4. Screen participants to ensure that appropriate eligibility criteria for involvement in the study are met and administer consent and demographic questionnaire

5. Facilitate 15 focus groups in total with six to eight participants each between January 1 and March 31, 2004. Focus groups will be conducted using an audio-tape recorder with the following population segments:

* Children who participate in a breakfast or morning snack program

* Parents whose children participate in a breakfast or morning snack program

* Parents whose children do not participate in a breakfast or morning snack program

* Breakfast or morning snack program volunteers whose children do not attend a snack program

6. Interview seven educators (teachers or principals) and seven program coordinators individually, using an audio-tape recorder, between January 1 and March 31, 2004

7. Write a brief one-page summary after each focus group session and individual interview to provide preliminary results prior to systematic analysis of the data

8. Oversee the work of the data transcriber by delivering audio-tapes to the transcriber and reviewing and editing transcriptions for the successful importing of data into the qualitative data analysis software by May 31, 2004

9. Work with the Qualitative Research Task Group in the coding, analysing and interpreting the data August 31, 2004
Description of Qualifications Required for the Qualitative Researcher



Minimum three to five years demonstrated experience in

* Working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders on a community-based research project

* Conducting qualitative research in educational and community settings

* Conducting focus group and individual interviews with a variety of populations, particularly children

* Preparing written summaries of focus group and individual interviews

* Analysing qualitative data using appropriate software

* Writing research reports



In addition, the successful candidate will

* Possess excellent qualitative research and communication (oral, listening, and written) skills

* Understand and be sensitive to diversity, access, and social stigma as these issues relate to school-based and community-based programs

* Have a willingness, the flexibility and a vehicle to travel to various parts of the province

* Possess the ability to speak and write in both English and French languages



Respondents are asked to provide:

* Letter of interest

* Curriculum Vitae outlining education and experience relevant to this study

* Names of three references who can be contacted regarding experience relevant to this study

* Expected remuneration (including GST, if applicable)

* Reports from previous qualitative research

* Criminal Background Check in order to enter elementary schools and to conduct focus groups with children



Compensation

The applicant should clearly identify the anticipated fees to carry out this project.
