The Urban History Review / Revue d'histoire urbaine invites submissions
for a theme issue on Public Health and the City, to be published in
fall 2007. This issue will provide a timely opportunity to survey
our understanding of the history of public health in cities in Canada
and the Americas, and coincides with the upcoming annual meeting of the
CHA/SHC (Canadian Historical Association/Société historique du Canada),
the principal theme of which will be "The City." The CHA/SHC meetings
are being held at York University in May 2006.
Papers on all aspects of the theme are welcome. Possible topics include
(but are not limited to) the urban history of Mortality decline, Public
health and sanitary reform, Health professionalization (medical,
nursing, occupational, engineering, etc.), Medical institutions, Family
and domestic health and health care, Environmental health (waste,
toxic, etc.), and Health/sanitary engineering.
One page proposals for articles should be submitted by December 15,
2005. Final submissions should be from 6,000 to 8,000 words, with a
deadline for completion of August 1, 2006.
We welcome papers either in English or French. Prospective authors are invited to visit the web site at http://www.hist.umontreal.ca/u/urbanhistory/home.html for more information and guidelines.
