Osh-ka-be-wis Assistants, Anishnawbe Health Toronto

Anishnawbe Health Toronto, an accredited Community Health Centre, seeks two (2) individuals to participate in training as Osh-ka-be-wis Assistants.


This one year training program will provide a combination of classroom and on-the-job training.  Under the direct supervision of the Osh-Ka-be-Wis, the participant will receive training to be a Traditional helper to the Traditional Healers, Elders and Medicine People within an intra-disciplinary health care model.  You will receive training by Traditional Healers, Elders and Medicine People in their conducting of sweat lodge, vision quests and other healing ceremonies and be instructed in the gathering, preparation, storage and identification of traditional medicines.

You will acquire understanding and experience working in a community health care setting.  You will receive training in Purkinje, an electronic health record program, and other computer programs; record keeping; statistics; data entry; handling business office equipment; and other administrative duties.  


You will demonstrate a desire to learn and gain understanding of the culture, traditions, teachings, ceremonies and practices of Aboriginal people.  You will have a positive, professional, courteous and respectful manner with a desire to help people find their healing path.  You are a team player with a knowledge and understanding of the health needs of urban Aboriginal people.
