The Department, Division and its Strategy
Working within the Health Department (Public Health) and reporting to the Manager, Vaccine Preventable Diseases Program, you will support the Division's mandate to ensure that children attending schools and day care facilities have adequate levels of protection from vaccine preventable diseases in accordance with the Immunization of School Pupils Act and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care's Mandatory Program and Services Guidelines.
The Team You Will Lead
You will supervise a multi-disciplinary team comprised of Public Health Nurses and IRIS clerks. The team provides a variety of services related to compliance with the Immunization of School Pupils Act. This includes data entry, assessment and maintenance of immunization records and implementation of parent notification processes up to and including suspension from school. The team also promotes the importance of immunization, provides individual consultation and case management, and facilitates access to related care as required.
As Supervisor, you will be required to recruit, coach, motivate and evaluate employees while ensuring efficient utilization of resources. Organizational and administrative skills are essential. You will plan, implement and evaluate programs related to immunization for school aged children under the Immunization of School Pupils Act. You will prepare and monitor the team budget, establish work plans, develop performance targets and operational objectives in order to meet departmental requirements. As required, you will also provide back up Supervision for the other communicable disease programs including after hours emergency coverage.
Strong problem solving and decision making skills are necessary for success. You will ensure adherence to practices and standards set out in the Department's Service Strategy Business Plan and BEST (Building Employee Satisfaction Together) objectives.
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) are essential in order for you to communicate effectively with your Manager, Vaccine Preventable Diseases, Director of Communicable Diseases, Supervisory team, direct reports and other Departmental staff. Written reports must be technical, factual and statistically sound. You will be required to liaise with other public health jurisdictions, school boards, physicians and community agencies throughout the region and province. Political awareness, tact and diplomacy are essential.
The successful candidate will hold a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent and current certification with the College of Nurses of Ontario combined with a minimum of five years public health experience. Previous supervisory experience is required. Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures related to vaccine preventable diseases and health promotion is required. You must have a working knowledge of Regional policies/practices, Provincial standards and have excellent skills in program planning, implementation and evaluation. You will demonstrate strong research, analytical and presentation skills.
