Community Health Promoter, Planned Parenthood Toronto

Planned Parenthood Toronto is a fully accredited community health centre that provides primary health care services to youth 13 to 29 years as well as health promotion programming, education, training and research to improve the health and well being of Toronto's diverse communities. We are currently seeking a Community Health Promoter to work 37.5 hours per week to develop and implement sexual health programming to high school-aged youth, with a specific focus on youth from diverse newcomer communities.  

Responsibilities include

  • Work with community members and agencies to develop strategies that address sexual health issues for diverse communities of youth
  • Work in collaboration with community agencies to develop a range of health promotion activities including sexual health workshops, youth groups and innovative projects
  • Coordinate all components of sexual health initiatives for high school-aged youth including: program design, module development, program implementation, promotion, outreach, liaising with community partners and facilitation of workshop sessions
  • Through community consultations and needs assessments, identify emerging needs and trends with respect to sexual health for high school-aged youth, in particular youth from diverse newcomer communities
  • Develop and conduct programming evaluation
  • Liaise with community partners to build and maintain positive community relationships
  • Act as a resource on sexual health issues for PPT staff and externally with agencies
  • Support advocacy related to community health needs, including participating in community forums and networks
  • Support the development, implementation and evaluation of health promotion resources
  • Participate in the implementation of PPT's volunteer peer-to-peer training
  • Assist in the development of funding proposals
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new staff
  • Participate in agency's committee, team and program meetings, as requested and including the Annual General Meeting
  • Perform other duties from time to time as related to the job and based on agency needs

Qualifications include

  • University or college degree in social services, health or education with minimum two years experience in a similar role OR five years equivalent experience in a similar role
  • Two years health promotion experience in a community setting
  • Experience working from a community development perspective and an anti-discrimination/anti-oppression framework
  • Experience working with youth, in particular youth from diverse newcomer communities
  • Experience working in high school settings an asset
  • Experience networking and working collaboratively with local agencies and community groups
  • Experience in program development, implementation and evaluation
  • Knowledge of sexual health issues for diverse youth communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity goals and feminist principles and be pro choice, youth positive, gay-positive and sex-positive
  • Available to work evenings as required
  • Commitment to working cooperatively in a community-based setting as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency and experience working in a computerized environment
