Epidemiologist
(1 Permanent Full Time Positon)

Summary of Duties

Reporting to the Manager, Applied Research and Evaluation, the Epidemiologist shall carry out applied epidemiological studies; investigate and monitor community events and trends through data collection, data analysis and report generation.

General Duties

  • Provide epidemiological expertise and data analysis to support program planning and evaluation in other divisions in Public Health Services.
  • Monitor community events and trends through locating and assembling data, analyzing data and generating reports.
  • Provide leadership and support to data analysts, program evaluation coordinators and other divisional staff to ensure effective team work.
  • Examine the usefulness of available data for Public Health planning and evaluation activities.
  • Convert the data into information through the production of graphs and tables in consultation with Public Health Services managers and key informants in the community through an iterative editing process.
  • Lead the development of reports for the dissemination of health status information to the Public Health Services staff and groups in the community, including Public Health Services Health Status Report.
  • Manage projects relevant to applied Public Health research, which includes planning methodology, designing surveys, data collection, data management and analysis and writing grant proposals to secure external funding for applied research projects.
  • Collaborate extensively within Public Health Services and/or within the community to disseminate or support dissemination of information and intelligence.  Work as a team member in supporting others at various levels to disseminate information and intelligence.
  • Participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Represent Public Health Services on designated municipal, community or provincial committees.
  • Tutor or consult for professional students in affiliated universities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned which are directly related to the responsibilities of this position.

Qualifications

  1. Master's Degree in Epidemiology that included courses/experience in outbreak/health hazard management or equivalent.  Demonstrated knowledge and skills in public health such as program planning, implementation and evaluation, health promotion strategies, community health measurement, theoretical models, research and policy analysis.
  2. Experience and demonstrated skill in outbreak/health hazard management.
  3. Experience and demonstrated skill in project management.
  4. Computer and data management skills, including ability to design and analyze data bases, including statistical analysis on computer, e.g. epi-info, SPSS/SAS, Word, desktop publishing, Excel or related programs.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work in a variety of interdisciplinary teams.
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  7. Eligible for academic appointment with Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University or College of Social and Applied Sciences, University of Guelph.

Salary:  Salary Grade 5
$60,067.28 - $70,670.60 per annum

Hours: 35 per week
