Represents Registered Midwives and Promotes the Profession of Midwifery in Ontario

The Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM) is seeking a Communications Co-ordinator to provide communications leadership during an exciting period of growth, challenge and opportunity for midwifery in Ontario. The AOM is committed to the expansion of the midwifery profession and to supporting midwives in providing optimal care that is responsive to the needs of women and newborns. Reporting to the Director of Policy and Communications, the Communications Co-ordinator is responsible for liaising with media as well as co-ordinating the AOM's communication to midwives, consumers/supporters, health care professionals and hospitals, government (principally the Ministry of Health and LHINs) and other stakeholders.

The ideal candidate requires

  • proven track record with media relations and organizational communication
  • demonstrated skill and knowledge of community and mainstream media (including the ability to build key relationships with media, pitch stories, write media releases, and write letters to the editor and opinion editorials)
  • experience with campaign design and implementation
  • a thorough understanding of interactive media tools, how best to apply these and how to foster an organizational culture that values member participation and can use technology to best support/increase participation
  • experience co-ordinating, writing and editing newsletters
  • excellent initiative and the capacity to work in a self-directed manner
  • a working knowledge of women's health and midwifery in Ontario

The successful candidate must be a strategic thinker and demonstrate a thorough understanding of working within an association environment. The ideal candidate will have a relevant university degree or equivalent and posses more than five years related work experience. Experience as a midwife or a midwifery consumer is an asset.
