Improving the Prevention of Eating-related Disorders: Collaborative Research, Advocacy, and Policy Change

Toronto Board of Trade

Brought to you by Department of Community Health Systems Resource Group, The SickKids Learning Institute, The Hospital for Sick Children

As early as school entry, girls appear to already live in a culture in which peers, adult role models, and the media transmit the thin ideal in a way that negatively influences the development of body image and self-esteem. Increasingly, there is pressure on boys to conform to narrow standards of physical appearance. This symposium will focus on understanding the multiple risk and protective factors related to body dissatisfaction in children and youth and the implications for the prevention of eating-related problems. Special emphasis will be placed on school- and community-based interventions that embrace partnership development and advocacy.
