Second Annual Greater Toronto Area LHINs Aboriginal Community Engagement Event: Strengthening the Circle: Building Knowledge on Aboriginal Health in an Urban Environment

The purpose of the day is to bring together both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organizations who are leaders in Aboriginal healthcare/ social services/ research to discuss the development of a new knowledge network to share information, research and data on urban Aboriginal peoples to enable health planning and develop a baseline on urban Aboriginal health in the GTA.

At the event, there will be an expert panel that will present urban Aboriginal researcher including:

  • Dr. Janet Smylie, Our Health Counts
  • Mario Gravalle, Métis Nation of Ontario Chronic Disease Surveillance
  • Dr. Heather Howard, Aboriginal Diabetes Project
  • Women of the Shining Light

There will also be discussion groups to provide input and direction about how we gather and utilize community information in a respectful way, and how to make this information accessible so that it will facilitate appropriate health planning and ultimately benefit health outcomes for the urban Aboriginal community.
