New Heights Community Health Centres are organizing an ambitious, two-neighbourhood health festival for World Health Day. The purpose: bring together people who live, work and go to school in Lawrence Heights and Bathurst-Finch (Westminster-Branson) for a day of food, music, entertainment, workshops and, most importantly, discussion and debate.
Health and the City event will look at issues like food security, access to health care and violence prevention among youth, community activism and capacity building. There will also be plenty of fun activities like yoga and Zumba, collage-making, planting, a cooking competition, drumming and dancing. Most importantly, in line with New Heights’ mission of ‘achieving health together,’ Health and the City event will celebrate the work done by community members to protect and promote health.
Health Champions will be honoured at a special award ceremony during the Health and the City event. Forty-seven individuals and 2 groups have been nominated to receive the award for their outstanding contributions. They advocate for new and better services in their community, raise awareness about important health issues, promote healthy lifestyles, create community spaces and groups that help combat isolation, build community capacity through education and empowerment. Health Champions’ achievements are numerous. Developing the Lawrence Heights bedbug education project, establishing a community garden in the Bathurst-Finch neighbourhood, spearheading the Nannies and Caregivers Advocacy and Training project are only a few examples among many.
