JOB PURPOSE

The Senior Advisor, Communications is responsible for strategic direction, day-to-day management and execution of high profile projects with multiple internal and external players. The Senior Advisor, Communications will generate awareness of the Canadian Cancer Society, its work, its people and its impact.  The Senior Advisor, Communications represents the Ontario Division on working groups and related projects at the national level, as well as mentoring other communication coordinators and public affairs team members. 

Working in a fast-paced environment on multiple initiatives, the Senior Advisor, Communications must possess experience in media relations and supporting communication requirements in a project management environment.  Primary stakeholders include media, general public and all internal audiences.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and execute communication plans and programs that meet business and stakeholder requirements and generate positive editorial coverage of business activities
  • Act as communication team lead on various projects, working closely with business leadership and project teams to advance communication priorities and develop effective integrated communication plans
  • Serves as consul to support and facilitate the delivery of province-wide communication initiatives and programs to business unit stakeholders
  • Track measurements to ensure effectiveness of all communications and appropriate ROI
  • Creative development including writing, editing and presentation development
  • Manage successful relationships with public relations/promotion agencies to support key programs
  • Compose and coordinate approvals of news releases, backgrounders, pitches, key messages, prepared stories, website content as required to support key programs
  • Respond to inquiries from the general public and media
  • Other projects/duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in corporate communications, consumer product marketing or a background in journalism
  • 5 years minimum experience working in a high pressure, fast-paced communications, public affairs or marketing environment
  • Knowledge of communications planning, including media relations, public relations, promotion, and branding
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Experience developing creative briefs and working with agencies
  • Comfortable in dealing with the media and the public
  • Strong organizational, time management, project management, communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Adaptable and the ability to deal with competing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build solid relationships
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word/Excel/PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of Canadian Cancer Society policies and procedures would be an asset
  • Non-smoker

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Works independently, but often as part of multidisciplinary teams
  • Must be able to meet tight deadlines
  • Balances multiple priorities and interaction with many clients on a daily basis
  • Involved frequent travel off site to attend meetings

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • May sit for extended periods
  • May involve significant computer use
