Reporting to the Director, Building Inclusive Communities, the Operations Manager is responsible for developing, maintaining and continuously improving systems, policies and procedures that ensure excellence in operations of the Building Inclusive Communities Department.  The position leads a team of individuals engaged in operational and administrative roles, creating a culture of team work aimed at delivering exceptional customer service.  Areas of responsibilities include budgeting and financial management; financial and service reporting; developing and maintaining efficient financial systems and processes; collaborating in the development and maintenance of client and service data systems that enable program management and reporting to internal and external stakeholders; overseeing the department’s role in developing and implementing an IT strategy in conjunction with the IT Director; overseeing health and safety within the department; and developing strong partnerships.  The Operations Manager participates actively as a member of the Building Inclusive Communities management team, the Family Service Toronto Leadership Team, and other internal committees as may be required from time to time.


  • Post graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. public administration, business administration) or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years of experience in non-profit operational management
  • Experience working with diverse groups and marginalized people.  Ability to use personal authority appropriately, respectfully, strategically and skillfully
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of social justice, cultural competency, equity and inclusion
  • Effective leadership skills including the ability to work with personnel at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to nurture and lead a strong team, supporting personal and professional development as well as innovation
  • Knowledge and understanding of the bio/psycho/social impact of developmental disabilities
  • Demonstrated business administration skills including sophisticated understanding of financial and administrative systems
  • Ability to conceptualize at the macro level and intervene at the micro level
  • Ability to work collaboratively and strategically with service partners and funders
  • Excellent communication skills: clear written and verbal communication, conflict resolution, facilitation, ability to dialogue professionally with a broad cross-section of individuals, ability to openly give and accept feedback
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Access) and Windows
  • Superior organizational, analytical, planning and problem solving abilities.  Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, prioritize and take initiative.  Ability to work independently but also to function in a team environment
  • Experience managing in a unionized environment
