Mental Health First Aid, Mental Health Commission Canada

Would you know how to help?  1 in 3 Canadians who will experience a mental health problem.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a program of the Mental Health Commission Canada designed to increase awareness of mental health issues, reduce stigma, familiarize participants with signs and symptoms of Mental Health issues and equip them with basic skills and knowledge to help a person access mental health resources.

Target Audience: anyone whose work (paid or volunteer) brings them in contact with people who may experience mental health problems.  People involved in coaching, social services, career counselling, hospitality, human resources, security, and many other endeavours may find the course useful.

After completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise signs and symptoms of mental health problems
  • Assess the risk of suicide and/ or harm
  • Provide initial help to a person experiencing a mental health problem or crisis
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Guide a person towards appropriate professional help or other supports
  • Receive a Certificate of Participation.

The December 4 & 5 session is for adults who interact with youth (14 hours over 2 days).  The January 9 &16, 2013, session is the basic course addresses all ages (12 hours over 2 days).

Pre-registration is required for these interactive workshops which are limited to 16-20 participants for each program. Fee is $130 for the Basic course and $160 for the Youth course. Participants would choose one version only. Both courses include an informative manual, a certificate of completion, and refreshments.  The Youth course includes a light lunch.

Course facilitators are Social Workers experienced in working in mental health programs who have been certified by the Mental Health Commission of Canada to offer these workshops.
