To lead the regional network dedicated to infection prevention and control across all health sectors by promoting common approaches to infection prevention and control within each region and across the province; to provide leadership, coordination, monitoring, and coaching for the local RICN team in coordination with the provincial IPAC teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the activities of the local RICN team, and performs day to day supervisory functions with respect to attendance management, monitoring of work quality and completion, coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Assists with performance management of staff in the local RICN team through setting goals for performance that align with the provincial and local priorities, monitoring progress and providing feedback to Provincial RICN Manager with respect to staff performance.
  • Creates, promotes and maintains a cooperative working relationships with stakeholders  hroughout the region to promote excellence, integration and continuous improvement in infection prevention and control activities across the healthcare continuum (e.g. acute care, long term care, public health); fosters collaborative and productive relationships with network partners both within the region and provincially; responds to calls from stakeholders on a wide variety of infection prevention and control issues, provides timely guidance and advice based on current evidence and best practices.
  • Ensures that knowledge exchange occurs through the delivery of relevant educational activities which establish a systematic approach to delivering program goals; coordinates the sharing of information between stakeholders of the Network, PHO and the Ministry of  Health and Long-Term Care; participates in the delivery of educational programs and evaluates their success; facilitates the development of apprenticeship and/or mentorship program for Infection Prevention and Control professionals within the region, as well as the Infection Control Consultants and Network Assistants in their local RICN and other team staff as appropriate.
  • Participates in the development of mid to long-term goals, operational strategies and deliverables for improving the coordination and access to infection prevention and control resources across the health care continuum within their region aligned with the provincial mandate; facilitates the process for standardization of infection control practices, including roll-out of integrated surveillance systems, works on patient safety indicators,  identifying and making provisions to overcome barriers to accessible information due to language, disability, remote geography or limitations of technology; plans and aligns network activities with current PHO strategic directions.
  • Formulates and develops specific projects that fulfil the Network’s mandate on a wide  range of topics by linking/consulting with stakeholders both within and outside of the PHO and using project management methodologies to coordinate all aspects of the project, such as: creating plans with timelines, identifying roles/outcomes, ensuring all expenditures are approved and authorized within financial delegations; delivers final outcomes, evaluates project results and stakeholder engagement; participates on provincial working groups.
  • Participates in activities such as Infection Control Resource Teams (ICRTs) to address urgent needs in health care settings.
  • Participates in department research activities as appropriate, keeps apprised of the latest research and developments in infectious disease prevention and infection control within the PHO and at other institutions.
  • Provides regular activity reports to the RICN Manager; participates in research activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the operations and authority of the various local stakeholders in the infection prevention and control system, i.e., community laboratories, hospitals, health care providers, and health units, together with a thorough understanding of relevant regulations and trends in epidemiology, public health, acute care, long-term care and surveillance (e.g. privacy legislation) in order to maintain and cooperative working relationships with stakeholders throughout the region to promote excellence, integration and continuous improvement in infection prevention and control activities across the healthcare spectrum.
  • Management knowledge and planning skills are required to manage complex planning activities as well as to perform day to day supervisory functions of the local RICN team; project management skills and financial budget management skills are also required.
  • Analytical, problem solving and evaluation skills to critically appraise practice related to quality improvement, ethical and clinical issues and affect change in practical environments.
  • Organizational skills are required, with an ability to determine priorities and plan activities while performing a variety of different responsibilities with conflicting deadlines, particularly to determine the importance and urgency of issues and to respond effectively to fluctuating work load demands in a fast paced environment.
  • Skill and proficiency with various computer systems and software programs including:
  • database management, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications, (MS Office).
  • Ability to work independently and on own with minimal supervision, will be required to travel within geographic area and to other areas of the province, including PHOs head office in Toronto.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, Education or other relevant area.
  • Certification in Infection Control.
  • Thorough knowledge of infection prevention and control best practice standards within a variety of health care settings, e.g. acute care, long-term care, community care, etc.
  • Five years of experience in quality assurance programs is required in order to lead the regional network dedicated to infection prevention and control across all health sectors by promoting common approaches to infection prevention and control within each region and across the province.
