An Exciting Opportunity

Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Cancer Prevention, the Manager, Screening Saves Lives is responsible for the operation and administration of the Screening Saves Lives (SSL) Program and supports the Division’s implementation of strategic initiatives in the area of cancer screening and early detection.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the Society’s Screening Saves Lives program, a peer educator program that focuses on engaging hard to reach populations to increase cancer screening rates, including development, implementation and evaluation activities. The program is currently engaging First Nations communities on Manitoulin Island, South Asian communities in Peel and Toronto, and Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) communities in Ontario.
  • Support the development, review, and revision of program materials and resources to ensure they are in line with the Society’s recommendations regarding cancer screening and early detection, while meeting the cultural and community specific needs of the groups that are being served through the program.
  • Lead the expansion and adaptation of the program to diverse communities in Ontario (
  • Chinese communities in Markham and low income communities in North Hamilton).
  • Lead the coordination and development of communications and social marketing campaigns to promote early detection and screening.
  • Work with community partners, cancer organizations and other health care partners to identify opportunities for collaboration and to increase the profile of the Screening Saves Lives program
  • Support internal capacity building with staff and volunteers to expand the reach of the Society’s screening and early detection recommendations.
  • Liaise, develop relationships and work with Community Offices/Regions to better integrate the SSL program
  • Represent the department and/or the Society at relevant external meetings and committees, roundtables and conferences, workgroups and networks
  • Identify opportunities and lead the development of grant applications to further expand the reach of the program
  • Initiate opportunities to communicate Canadian Cancer Society mission, programs and support for research to the local community
  • Act as a media spokesperson for the SSL program
  • Support the planning, development and implementation of activities related to the primary and secondary prevention of cancer as required
  • Support Division projects and other projects/ duties as assigned
  • Staff Management Responsibilities
  • Manage the program’s human resource needs as required, including recruitment, training and development, coaching and performance management for the program as well as for individual achievement
  • Manage  a team of 6 staff, 4 of whom work remotely
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to by volunteers and staff
  • Fiscal Management Responsibilities
  • Monitor program adherence to financial policies and controls
  • Ensure an adequate audit trail is in place to meet internal requirements
  • Determine expense projections as part of the budgeting process
  • Monitor expenditures against a plan and initiate remedial activity as required
  • Prepare and submit quarterly reports and budgets to the Public Health Agency of Canada
  • Health and Safety Responsibilities
  • Provides a safe and healthy work environment for team members and relevant stakeholders.  Ensures they work in compliance with The Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations and the Society’s Health & Safety Policy.
  • Review and comply with the Canadian Cancer Society’s health and safety policy.

Qualifications

  • Related post-secondary education in the field of health promotion, community development or social work
  • 3-5 years of experience working with diverse communities and leading Community Advisory Committees
  • 5+ years of experience working within a non-profit or community service setting, experience in a multi-level, non-profit organization is preferred
  • Knowledge of population based screening programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health promotion approaches and strategies related to cancer prevention and screening
  • Applied knowledge of program development and evaluation
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, strategic thinking and communication skills
  • Dynamic presentation and public relations skills
  • Ability to influence peers and those in more senior positions.
  • Strong ability to problem-solve and reach sound resolutions
  • Strong initiative and capacity to work independently, balanced with teamwork
  • Flexibility and the ability to deal with competing priorities
  • Proficient in MSOffice (Word/Excel)
  • Frequent travel required
  • Knowledge of Canadian Cancer Society policies and procedures is an asset
  • A criminal record check is required
  • Non-smoker

Working Conditions

  • Office environment with occasional requirements to work outside of regular office hours

  • Responds to inquiries from the general public (in person, on phone or via e-mail)
  • Intermittent evening and weekend work
  • Provincial Office based with frequent travel
  • May sit or stand for extended periods
  • May involve significant computer use
  • Occasional lifting, carrying and set-up of equipment/ materials for presentation
