About Reach for the Rainbow

Reach for the Rainbow (RFTR) is a registered Canadian charity, operating under charitable business number #11911 1748 RR0001. For 30 years, RFTR has been recognized as a critical support system for participants, families, partners and social service agencies which facilitate respite and inclusive recreational opportunities across the Province. The organization provides an essential service to families and care givers; in-take assessments for participants, the training of 1:1 support counsellors, program training to meet the individual needs of each participant, the arrangement of accessible transportation and the loan of special adaptive equipment (terra treks, harnesses, joggers etc.).


Working under the direction of the Program Manager, the primary focus of this position is to provide day-to-day administrative support to the Program Department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible to develop an accurate assessment of participant needs; interpret the information to program teams and 1:1 support staff through written and oral presentations, in a manner consistent with the principles of normalization and integration
  • Responsible for the development of integrated opportunities and trained support counselors through partnership and liaison with organized children’s camps and community recreation providers
  • Coordinate camp and Year-round placements with families of individuals with developmental and/or physical disabilities
  • Coordination, training and resource-service visits for partner programs to support successful placements of campers and young adult volunteers
  • Assist to develop and instruct current training curricula and outreach materials
  • Assist with the organizational support and coordination of training events, including Annual Reach for the Rainbow Conference at Humber College, sponsored by Sick Kids Foundation since 2003
  • Advocacy for participants with a broad range of service needs and personal goals
  • Link families to community resources and funding
  • Facilitate meaningful roles and responsibilities for young adults in supported work placements at children’s camps
  • Participate in inter-agency and/or camping-recreational committees and meetings
  • Responsible to coordinate and develop related program activities including and not limited to: ‘All Kids in Camp Conference’ with Thames Valley Children’s Centre, City of London, UWO and the Boys’ & Girls Club; RFTR/Trillium funded provincial advisories; outreach activities
  • Assist with specific projects as determined by the Program Manager


  • University degree in social services or recreation.  A minimum of five years related work with children and youth with developmental and/or physical disabilities
  • Counseling/case management skills
  • Strong communication, decision making and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and presentation skills
  • Able to provide effective leadership across varied tasks
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdependent, collaborative team
  • Must demonstrate trustworthy, ethical and confidential service conduct
  • Experience and progressive leadership roles in children’s camping or recreation programs is an asset
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Working knowledge and relevant computer applications including Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Working knowledge of database software is an asset
