Registered Nurse--Harm Reduction, Regent Park Community Health Centre

We are a dynamic community-based health centre promoting social justice and health equity in the Regent Park neighbourhood and east downtown area of Toronto. We operate
out of several locations and provide a wide variety of services including: primary health care, chiropody, physiotherapy, health promotion, social work, community health, immigrant
and refugee services, housing assistance, harm reduction and homeless programs, Pathways to Education for high school students, infant and child development programs,
parenting education and family advocacy. We currently have the following opening on our Clinical team:

Salary Range: $30.66 to $36.94 per hour plus benefits

The Harm Reduction Nurse assists in the provision of direct patient care and community services in order to improve the health of the Regent Park Community.

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Harm Reduction Nurse serves a high densitylow income, multicultural, inner city community through a variety of methods including direct client care, health promotion and education, advocacy, and community development. The main area of focus this role is to support RPCHC’s contribution to the prevention of overdoses in the Regent Park community. The Harm Reduction Nurse will also provide backup support to the primary care nurses as needed.

Duties include:

  • Providing low-threshold primary care to clients who use substances, including existing primary care clients, drop-in program participants and walk-in clinic clients
  • Supporting supervised injection services (SIS) by supervising clients to administer their own injections (at external partner SIS sites &/or at possible future RPCHC sites)
  • Responding to client overdoses and other medical emergencies
  • Providing education and counselling within a harm reduction framework to clients regarding their substance use
  • Supporting clinical expansion of harm reduction and substance use treatment initiatives such as suboxone prescription and management.
  • Screening and triaging clients and community members who call and/or walk in
  • Providing supportive and therapeutic counselling and crisis intervention on an individual or group basis
  • Assisting with developing care plans, care coordination and referrals for clients
  • Performing basic nursing skills (e.g. dressings injections, suture/clip removal and assisting with procedures) and added nursing skills as required (e.g. venipuncture, pulmonary function testing, ECGs)
  • Maintaining accurate and timely electronic health records
  • Maintaining an active role in outreach and community development


  • Current certification as a Registered Nurse in the Province of Ontario required.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ nursing experience is required, in a community setting or combination of community and hospital or public health settings.
  • Experience working with people who use drugs is required
  • Experience in primary care within a street/outreach nursing setting is an asset.
  • Experience working with racialized populations, Indigenous peoples, women who mengage in sex work, prisoners/ex-prisoners, people with mental health challenges, and people who have experienced trauma, is an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of substance use and overdose response
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across teams
  • Understanding of Anti-oppression principles and ability to work effectively with people of various cultural, age and economic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of the Regent Park area and issues affecting the community, including services and resources available for clients
  • Must be available to work extended hours (before 9am, after 6pm, weekends) as required
