How to create a virtual learning community

Abstract: All organizations and entities are potential learning communities waiting to grow. Knowledge management research indicates that employees need encouragement and support to share information and learn from each other. They also need a place outside the classroom that is highly interactive and where they can make continuous learning an everyday reality. Thus, helping work groups establish virtual communities of practice using the latest technology will increase the opportunities of achieving real learning, which will result in improved job performance. Training professionals can develop Internet World Wide Web-based applications to reinforce learning, facilitate team sharing, provide resources and open communication. A case study of a software development group's establishment of a virtual community is presented.
