The Banner Over the Road - the evaluation report of the Committee for a Smoke-Free Uxbridge - June 1998

"The Banner Over the Road" refers to the banner belonging to the Committee for a Smoke-Free Uxbridge with the phrase "Let's Be Smoke Free". The banner hung prominently over the main road in Uxbridge and symbolized the Committee's work. The Committee was a 4-year project

funded by the provincial and federal Ministries of Health. The goal of the project was to mobilize a community a community to address issues of tobacco and second hand smoke.

This lengthy and detailed report covers an evaluation of their work combining qualitative and quantitative information including:

- a process analysis of 4 years of activities

- analysis of a community survey conducted twice (with control community as well)

- analysis of school survey data from 3 years

- information collected from focus groups

- follow-up with participants of smokers & quitters groups

- media analysis.

Performance indicators are listed for each of the goals of the committee. Keys to success are also listed. Results suggest that the Committee for a Smoke-Free Uxbridge was successful overall, making inroads into smoking protection, prevention and cessation. However, more time is needed to produce further changes towards making smoke-free the norm in this community.
