Native Child and Family Services of Toronto (NCFST)

Congratulations to Native Child and Family Services of Toronto (NCFST) for winning the $50,000 Ruth Atkinson Hindmarsh Award from the Ontario-based Atkinson Charitable Foundation! The agency was awarded for their work of improving the lives of needy children. NCFST is the only full-time, off-reserve, child welfare agency managed by the Native community and operated under the Child an Family Services Act. They provide services based on the Native culture, which focus on traditional teaching on child and family life, ceremonies, healing circles, and involvement of elders. The services of the agency aim to reduce the apprehension of children. The agency provide programs such as:



- Casework, information and referral, counselling, family mediation, and advocacy,

- Customary Care Program to support children who need to be living away from their families

- Mooka'am Program for abused women and children

- Kagnasowin Program a travelling parent education resource centre

- Aboriginal HeadStart program to ensure that children are ready for school and

- an employment training program for young people at risk in the downtown core, in the young offender system.
