Community Worker, Early Years Family Support, East End Community Health Centre


East End Community Health Centre, a non-profit, multi-service centre providing health, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion, requires a Community Worker, Early Years Family Support.



The Community Worker works with our early years team to offer several programs for families with children age 0 to 6. The position involves recruitment, program delivery, evaluation and outreach to isolated families in the community. The worker's focus is working with parents to understand healthy child development and improve their parenting skills.



Responsibilities include

* Facilitating a variety of parenting programs such as You Make the Difference and Make the Connection

* Assisting the health promoter with the toddler and parent drop-in program

* Coordinating the delivery of EECHC's postnatal program with a nurse practitioner, dietitian and client support worker

* Developing, promoting and running parent/child play groups

* Assisting parents and staff in all early-years programs to recognize children who need extra support for healthy development

* Working with the local Early Years Centre coalition of agencies to develop innovative approaches to supporting parents

* Outreach to isolated families in the community
We are looking for an individual who has

* Experience working with parents of young children

* Training in or knowledge of childhood development

* A solid understanding of good parenting skills

* An understanding of the social and economic pressures on low-income and immigrant families

* Experience in running a program

* Creativity and innovative ideas in thinking through how to reach project goals



The following skills/experience are assets but are not required:

* Experience in facilitating groups

* Experience in local community development

* Knowledge of community services for children and families in the east end

* Knowledge of South Asian or Chinese languages



Length of Contract: until March 31, 2004, renewable annually

Hours: full-time, including two Saturdays per month

Salary: $33,000-$42,000 with benefits
