Ontario Health Canada, in agreement with P/T Ministers of Health, is assisting Ontario in managing the SARS crisis. Health Canada is coordinating this effort to mobilize support should the deployment of health professionals be required.
They have asked the Canadian Public Health Association, along with other NGOs, and health departments to assist them in establishing a pool of public health professionals. These professionals are sought to enhance current surveillance and analysis capacities in light of pressing demands associated with the current outbreak.
Below is a brief description of the professionals sought. It is expected that they will be needed for a two to four month period. Will function as part of the Toronto Public Health investigative teams in partnership with hospital and Ministry. Educational requirements are a MHSc in Community Health and Epidemiology or a MSc in Epidemiology or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Field investigation experience is an asset. Epidemiologists will be responsible for case investigations, production of reports and other epidemiology-related tasks. Strong computer skills experience with managing databases and proficiency with statistical software such as SPSS and EXCEL are required.
Community Health Physicians
Will function as part of the Toronto Public Health investigative teams in partnership with hospital and Ministry to participate in disease
investigation and control and epidemiological analyses.
Investigating Physician Requirements
MD licensed in Canada with training in epidemiology or public health. FRCPC in Community Medicine preferred but MHSc or MPH as a minimum. Infectious disease FRCPC is also acceptable.
Epidemiological Physician Requirements
MD licensed in Canada with certification in Community Medicine (FRCPC). MHSc or MPH required. Skill in use of EXCEL, databases and statistical software such as SPSS is required.
Will function as part of the Toronto Public Health investigative teams in partnership with hospital and Ministry. Public Health Nurse and/or Public Health Inspector with experience in communicable disease case management and surveillance.
Managers with public health experience in communicable diseases are required to function as part the Toronto Public Health investigative teams for the SARS response.
