Resource Teacher/Special Needs Support Worker, Ontario Early Years Centre in Beaches-East York

On contract to March 31, 2004, renewable annually


* Work alongside staff in eight Ontario Early Years Centre and Family Resource Program sites, with children and families, with a focus on children with extra support needs

* Development of training modules for delivery to staff, parents and community

* Consult with parents, care providers and staff regarding child development

* Child observations and developmental screens

* Development of individual program plans for in-program and home use

* Case coordination

* Referrals to appropriate supports and services

* Assist with transition planning

* Advocacy for supports and services on behalf of children and parents

* Facilitate Ontario Early Years Centres and satellites in promoting a welcoming environment both physically and visually reflective of an antibias policy with a focus on inclusion

* Model and mentor parents, program participants and staff in embracing the principles of inclusive practices

* Facilitate staff discussions related to children with extra support needs

* Collaborate with Ontario Early Years Centre administrative and program staff in developing and promoting protocols to address inclusion of families of children with extra support needs

* Outreach, including home visits, to families and the special needs community

* Resource development for staff

* Working knowledge of assessment tool application

* Ability to build relationships with parents, care providers and staff

* Antibias values and approach to serving children and families

* Strong communication skills, including written, oral and active listening

* Ability and motivation to develop extensive knowledge of community supports

* Ability to work within a flexible, community-based model of service delivery

* Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

* Excellent time management, multi-tasking and prioritization skills


* Early Childhood Education, Resource Teacher certificate or equivalent qualification and experience; candidates with a degree in Child Development, Psychology, Child Studies with related experience are encouraged to apply

* Minimum of three-years experience working directly with parents and children with a variety of needs

* Assets: experience in a family resource program; fluency in South Asian languages, Romanian, Turkish, Cantonese, Mandarin or Tagalog; use of a car

Salary: $36,700, three-weeks vacation

Hours: 35 hours weekly, may include some weekends and evenings
