The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit requires 2
F.T.E. Health Promoter or Public Health Nurse for the Chronic Disease
and Injury Prevention Programs in Port Hope, with current assignments
for Early Detection of Cancer and Skin Cancer Prevention programs (1
F.T.E.) and Tobacco programs (1F.T.E.) until November 2006*.

Position Summary

The Health Promoter/Public Health Nurse is responsible for planning,
implementing and evaluating the activities and services of the Chronic
Disease and Injury Prevention program(s) assigned.  The position
involves extensive community collaboration and mobilization,
facilitating healthy public policy, participation in program planning,
development, coordination, implementation and evaluation, and
consultation to staff and the community.

The successful candidate will have:

  • a four year bachelors degree in health
    sciences/studies/promotion/education, or in nursing with emphasis on
    public health, or in a related health discipline
  • successful completion of full courses in each of the following areas:
    • health promotion strategies
    • program planning and evaluation
    • statistics and data analysis and
    • behavioural psychology
    • (or demonstration of competencies required by the position as assessed by the Director)
  • well developed interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • demonstrated leadership skills
  • excellent organizational and analytical skills and good judgment
  • skills and experience in the areas of program planning,
    implementation and evaluation, group facilitation, community
    mobilization, social marketing, health education, mass media, healthy
    public policy development, research/needs assessment, use of
    epidemiology, adult education, behaviour change education
  • experience in basic computer applications in a Windows-based environment
  • expertise/experience in the program area assigned.
  • a valid Ontario Driver's Licence and access to a vehicle
  • experience in community/public health or health promotion is an asset

Location: Port Hope
Salary Range: $55,689 to $61,146
Start Date: March 2006
