Community Mission Specialist, Research, Advocacy and Health Promotion, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario

Location: 12 positions each with a specified geographic area

Purpose/Overall Accountability

As part of the Community Mission Team, the Community Mission Specialist
will be assigned to an area of the province and, supported by
leadership volunteers from that area, deliver and support activities to
engage communities for community impact on mission. The specialist, who
will work within the geographic areas assigned, will develop and
implement an annual regional plan that reflects a province-wide
community-based mission plan and responds to regional and local needs
and priorities.

General Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities for Each

Monitor regional needs and develop annual regional plan

  • Complete an environmental scan and monitor, on a continuing
    basis, key health partnerships, their current priorities and programs
    (Heart Health Networks, Tobacco Control Action Networks, School Health,
    Blood Pressure Control) in their assigned region.
  • Develop an annual mission plan for region with input from
    Regional Manager and Senior Specialist Health Partnerships. Initial key
    focus will be Healthy Weights AIM and Resuscitation.
  • Complete annual evaluation of progress against plan.

Contribute regional perspective to provincial plans

  • As part of the Community Mission Team provide input on the
    development of a community-based strategy, the evaluation process to
    refine and further develop the mission plan as well as feedback and
    scanning the mission marketplace on regional and local needs and
    activities to inform provincial goals and plans.
  • With respect to identified ethno cultural communities provide
    specialized expertise to Manger, Community Mission Team, to assist in
    the development of a plan to engage these communities.

Build and maintain relationships

  • Develop and maintain relationships with key local leaders in
    health promotion including Heart Health Coordinators, Local Health
    Integration Networks (LHINs), OSS Regional Program Managers and
    District Stroke Coordinators, Emergency Medical Services, and key
    leaders in identified ethno cultural communities.

Manage regional and local delivery of mission initiatives

  • Provide leadership to volunteers and health partners and manage
    specific programs outlined in approved provincial community mission
    plan including local advocacy efforts.

Volunteer recruit and support

  • With the assistance of the Volunteer Development Specialist and
    in consultation with Area Managers, recruit Chairs, Community Mission.
    Be the staff link from HSFO to Chairs, Community Mission and other
    mission volunteers in the region.

Coordinate with other HSFO programs

  • Be aware of all major HSFO fundraising plans for region in order
    to identify areas requiring coordination to maximize opportunities and
    minimize any overlaps/confusion between existing fund raising programs
    and new initiatives
  • Act as a resource to Field  fundraising staff on all mission
    programs providing them with provincially developed tools and resources
    to effectively integrate mission goals in fund raising as appropriate.
  • Act as a resource to Parent Brand team to identify and maximize
    opportunities to tell the HSFO story effectively at a regional level.
  • Act as a resource to Manager, Government Partner Programs to
    facilitate regional/local involvement in major public awareness
    campaigns.

  • Balancing the need to be responsive to communities as well as to province-wide goals for greatest impact on mission
  • Building a personal support system in a situation in which the
    job's focus is mission within a broader team that is focused on
    fundraising
  • Health Promotion arena is complex and changing with many stakeholders
  • Position will involve managing a large number of relationships both internal and external dealing with complex information
  • Managing diverse stakeholder expectation and perceptions of the Foundation's role in Health Promotion

  • Strong knowledge/experience with community planning and

    stakeholders to impact government and community policies and programs.
  • Has strong background in a related discipline (such as public
    health, dietician, nursing, health promotion, adult education) and
    strong knowledge of the Health Promotion sector gained through
    combination of school and professional experience
  • Prior experience developing health promotion partnerships

Project and Customer Management Skills

  • Excellent project management skills and demonstrated ability to
    work collaboratively with diverse staff, volunteers and external
    partners
  • Customer service and communications skills to be applied toward
    internal customers such as Field staff, volunteers and external
    customers (municipal councils, school boards, health partners)

Influence and Interpersonal Savvy

  • A combination of excellent communications skills, technical
    skills interpersonal skills, skills of persuasion and customer service
    skills in order to be able to establish credibility for the community
    mission business and gain the support of stakeholders/internal
    customers with diverse perspectives, in order to achieve goals
  • Contributes to a strong teamwork environment through
    demonstration of mutual respect, problem solving, conflict resolution
    and goal orientation
  • Capacity to build support through influence without direct authority

Other requirements

  • Knowledge or experience working with volunteers
  • Experience with diverse ethno cultural communities  
  • Proven ability to mange workload with little structure
  • Good networking skills
  • Related post secondary education (such as public health, dietician, nursing, health promotion, adult education)
  • 4-6 years experience
