The OHPE team was saddened this week to hear about the death of Dianne Ferster. Her colleague and friend Josie d'Avernas has written us with the following appreciation.

Dianne Ferster passed away on August 1, after a 2 year battle with cancer. She was 55. Prior to her illness, Dianne was manager of the Resource Dissemination Service for the Program Training and Consultation Centre, Ontario Tobacco Strategy. Prior to that, she was executive director of COMMIT to a Healthier Brant, a demonstration site for comprehensive, community-based tobacco control programming. This project was funded initially by the U.S. National Cancer Institute as a research project and then continued by the Ontario Ministry of Health as a demonstration site for the Ontario Tobacco Strategy. Her work history also includes a time as regional manager for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and she was actively involved in her community and in tobacco control in a volunteer capacity. Dianne was a longstanding member of the Council for a Tobacco-Free Ontario, the Council for a Tobacco-Free Brant County and the Catholic Women's League.

Dianne's cancer was diagnosed in November of 2000. After a successful chemotherapy regimen and surgery, she enjoyed several healthy, happy months with family and friends before her cancer returned. She is survived by her husband Harvey, daughters Jennifer and Amy, son-in-law Darcy, granddaughter Kaya, father and sister Marianne.

Dianne made the world a better place in her time here -- in her community-based tobacco control activities and in the personal warmth and caring she shared with all who knew her. The family suggests two organizations for those interested in making donations in her memory: the VON, Brant-Norfolk-Haldimand Branch (446 Grey St., Brantford N3S 7L6) or Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre Foundation (699 Concession St, Hamilton L8V 5C2).

"Some people come into our lives and quietly stay. Others stay only awhile, leaving footprints in our hearts and we are never the same."

Dianne's footprints in our hearts will endure.

This week's feature is "Working in a Political Climate: Lessons from the Rave Issue," written by Lawrence Murphy, Hamilton Social and Public Health Services Department and Jennifer Mitton, Regional Niagara Public Health Department. They write "Approximately 173,500 Ontario students reported attending a rave in 1999...Since some of these dance events are shrouded in secrecy, they are not always accessible to emergency services, which leads to concerns regarding the health and safety of attendees. Additionally, all-night dance events have gained a negative reputation in recent years as some have been held in places that have not met health and safety and fire regulations. This, combined with the availability of illicit drugs at these events, creates both potentially dangerous situations and a politically charged climate for policy development."
